I love birthdays because they are a great excuse to do something fun. And of course there is cake and that is how we started the day: 7am. Cupcakes. We usually don’t do presents, but we’ve been wanting a manual coffee grinder for the boat, so that was Mike’s present.Later in the day we headed down to San Diego Bay and rented a 26′ sailboat. Since we now have a trawler it had been a while since we went sailing. After getting the sail caught in the lazy-jacks while hoisting, we got the hang of it.For birthday dinner we headed to our favorite restaurant with my parents. ((I love the selfie beauty-setting on my new phone! ☺ )) The restaurant has the best mai tais, which are so potent, they come with a warning and are limited to two per person. So we stayed in a nearby hotel that night. The next day we headed to La Jolla Cove and took out the inflatable SUP and inflatable Hobie kayak. Since they pack down fairly small they go everywhere with us in the minivan. This must be the only beach in San Diego you can drive a car onto. This sea lion followed us around for a while. And after we were back on the beach we saw a whale about 200 yards from shore! Some of the best entertainment is watching the kayak tours come back to the beach surfing the waves and getting tumbled. Not wanting to have the same fate I swam back to shore while Mike brought in my kayak.
