Sea of Cortez Cabo Pulmo Beach

>>NOTE: There has been some confusion, so please note that this took place back in April but I am just now posting in November.<<

The last time I wrote a post we were having a great time driving down the Baja peninsula with our minivan and had made it about halfway to Cabo. Little did we know that in a couple more weeks our trip was going to come to an abrupt end. It’s been over six months and I am finally able to look back on our trip and remember all the great things we experienced with fond memories.

We made a few brief stops in places like Loreto and Todos Santos — all places we had also visited when we were cruising the Sea of Cortez on our sailboat.Loreto Baja Mexico Todos Santos Baja MexicoBut we wanted to get south to warmer water so we could do some snorkeling. Destination: Cabo Pulmo – the only hard coral reef in the Sea of Cortez and the oldest of only three coral reefs on the west coast of North America. The accommodations here were a bit more spendy. In northern Baja, we were paying around $50 per night but as we headed south it was about twice that.

We stayed for a week and took the inflatable kayak to the beach every day to go snorkeling.   With a little hike from the parking area, we had this beach all to ourselves. That dark spot on the beach is our umbrella. From Cabo Pulmo, we headed to La Fortuna for a week of minivan camping on the beach. The road to La Fortuna is packed dirt with sharp rocks sticking out. We had a few flat tires on the way but finding the best sushi in Mexico made the trip worth it. The surf was pretty good too. Just be prepared to share the beach with donkeys and cows. At the end of April, we headed down to Cabo to stay at a fancy resort for my birthday. We watched whales from our room, had foot massages by the pool, and had an early dinner at our favorite restaurant in Cabo.

On the evening of my birthday, Mike ran out to the car to grab his phone. The resort we were staying at was rather large so he was trying to save some time by riding his bike and had an accident. He ended up having surgery due to several facial fractures — in Mexico. He lost nine of his front teeth. By my next birthday, the tooth implant surgeries will hopefully be complete. We got lucky. We ended up at an excellent hospital with two amazing surgeons — in Mexico.
