One of my favorite places in San Diego (other than the beach) is out east towards the Anza-Borrego Desert, near Warner Springs, less than a mile from the Pacific Crest Trail. Some of the rock formations are reminiscent of Joshua Tree but there is a lot more vegetation here – like huge Coastal Live Oaks. This time of year it’s still quite cold at night but days are perfect for hiking and biking.

We parked along the national forest road and rode our bikes until the bike batteries were near 50%. Then we hiked down a mostly dry creek bed until the dropoff became too steep.

We had a bit of rain last week so the creek was flowing a little. So far it’s been a very dry winter here but after a very wet winter, these creeks can get quite high creating pools and waterfalls great for cooling off come March/April.

These days we always pack lunch, and our chairs and table are always in the van. These Pyrex dishes are a perfect size.

Our new electric bikes are folding, which eliminates the need for bike racks like we had on our trip to Alaska. Heaving those heavy bikes up to the van’s roof was not ideal. I also love my handlebar basket and since Mike doesn’t want one I get to carry both of our gear.

270,000 miles on our little camper minivan.
